Discrimination & Segregation still happens most often to students with Down syndrome.

Inclusion is a discussion most families are not talking about at the dinner table in most households. Unless you have a Child with Down syndrome the topic of Inclusion is talked about often. We know what being excluded and left out is all about. As parents and caregivers we know why it's important for our Children with Down syndrome to be Accepted and Fully Included into general education aka regular classes, sports and all the fun clubs and activities at school and just about everything in and around the Community we all live.

It doesn't feel good to be left out, not called on, not asked or invited to do what others are doing. Everyone wants to have friends and be accepted for who we are, just as we are. Inclusion is a way of thinking that many in society just do not get. Society still has a long way to go in accepting people with disabilities. Acceptance and Inclusion of People with Disabilities in all aspects of living is the CIVIL RIGHTS of today.

Inclusion and being part of the group is the right thing to do!
No one wants to be Excluded!

How would you feel if your name wasn't called and you were left out of what everyone else was doing? No one wants to be forgotten or left to always be last at being picked or not picked at all. How would you feel if you didn't have a BFF? We all want to be LIKED! We all want to be ACCEPTED. Discrimination, doesn't feel good, especially when it's happening to you! Being left out or turned away and not being called on or invited to 'the things' going on is hurtful and insensitive. People, wake up and look around your world, ask yourself:

"Have I ignored or made someone feel discriminated against?"

"Did I make someone feel left out and alone because they have a disability?"

"How can I be more helpful and accepting to those that are different than me?"

"Am I a friend to someone that could use a real friend?"

"Do I have any friends with disabilities?" (If not, why not?)

Let me guess, you clicked on this blog because you have a child with Down syndrome and the school doesn't want to allow your Child to be educated in the regular general education classroom. Your school district wants to segregate & have your child "go" somewhere else. A different classroom or a separate special needs school just for students with disabilities. I am only guessing, but this seems to be the way it goes for many (most) of our children sooner or later.

Being your Child's Advocate so they are accepted and part of whatever group or activity is going on is all we can do. We need to continue to Advocate for Inclusion for our Children. We can't make people become friends and like our children, but we sure can do what any good parent would do to make sure our Children are provided any and all opportunities that life throws our way from day-to-day. It means we do all we can to have our Children involved in all sorts of things that make our Children HaPpY!

INCLUSION IS AN ATTITUDE!
Inclusion is Natural~by Katie Snow

Oh how I wish I could take the hurt away I see when my own daughter is left out or forgotten. I so wish that discrimination and segregation wasn't allowed to happen today to anyone that has DIFFERENT ABILITIES! Why can't people see the discrimination and the hurt it causes others? Until it happens to you or someone you know and love, most will never really know what discrimination feels like and what it does to the core of a person's heart. It leaves a scar.

What can YOU do to make a difference in someone's life that is different than you in some way? We are all unique and wonderfully made. Be a better friend to that boy or girl you know is lonely and left alone by others or not called on and included in what everyone else is doing. You see those students that are Segregated in your school, reach out to them. Do the right thing and INCLUDE and become friends with someone new. Everyone wants and needs friends!

You may be the ONLY Friend they ever have!

Song: COUNT ON ME by John Jacobson's Music Express ~ Volume 12 ~ Got Music

BRUNO MARS LYRICS
"Count On Me"

[Verse 1:]
Oh uh-huh
If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you

Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

[Chorus:]
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like 4, 3, 2
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Ooooooh, oooohhh yeah, yeah

[Verse 2:]
If you're tossin' and you're turnin'
And you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Every day I will remind you

Oooh
Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

[Chorus:]
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like 4, 3, 2
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Ooooooh, oooohhh yeah, yeah

You'll always have my shoulder when you cry
I'll never let go, never say goodbye
You know...

[Chorus:]
You can count on me like 1, 2, 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like 4, 3, 2
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Ooooooh, oooohhh

You can count on me 'cause I can count on you

FLDOE Inclusion guidelines & Florida Inclusion Network (FIN) does what for our schools?

Good stuff on "How to Build an Inclusive Campus" at your Child's school.

~ Parenting and Educating a child with Down syndrome...do you believe in INCLUSION? Having our students with Down syndrome included in regular gen ed classes, is so important for them to gain many skills; academic as well as social, behavioral, speech and language skills and basic life skills. I know my daughter, learns by watching others way more than she learns by reading or listening.

Inclusion is Natural and is the Right Thing to Do for many students!

In this blog post I have added a nice Power Point Presentation I found online. Inclusion will happen only if the school you enroll your child in also WANTS to have an INCLUSIVE Campus. If our Public School Districts in Florida and the schools "site based management" aka the Principals want Inclusion too then half the battle is won. But if the Principal believes in SEGREGATION and keeping all the Special Needs students in classrooms together and doesn't want to change the way they have always done it, then this wonderful FIN Power Point Presentation is totally useless and was created as a SHOW! I hope not....share this PPP with your school and see what response they give you when you request to have a FIN rep come in and do a training on Inclusion.

Hats off to all of us as we start the new 2013-2014 school year wanting and hoping for better INCLUSION of ESE Students into Gen Ed Academic Education and especially with our children with Down syndrome!!

Look around and see....ASK: Where ARE THE STUDENTS with Down syndrome? Are they ALL attending the same school somewhere else far away from their neighborhood schools? Are there several students with Down syndrome all grouped together upstairs or are they all in a Separated ESE Classroom on the school campus away from the 'regular students?' Our students with Down syndrome generally are not being included into regular gen ed classrooms as an unspoken rule. *Discrimination!! Find out for yourself...ask around and ask your friends that have a child with Down syndrome what kind of classroom are they being educated in everyday. Some parents want this, and that's ok for them and their child. Placement is not suppose to be cookie-cutter by whole groups of students with certain traits. Some of us parents don't want that!

We should be allowed to have our child INCLUDED in regular gen ed classes if that is what we believe to be best for our children's academic education.

Florida Inclusion Network aka FIN ~ Exactly what does this organization actually do for school districts in the way of helping build more inclusive schools? Just asking...

HOW MUCH $MONEY DOES FIN GET each year? For doing what?? Is there information available showing the progress pertaining to our schools being more Inclusive because of what FIN provides?

I have asked for years, even added FIN support to my PARENT INPUT to my daughter's IEP, especially pertaining to PEER SUPPORT. Still NOTHING is provided to the school my Child ever attended.

I don't see how any of our Public Schools can be what we need them to be for our students that need INCLUSION if the school districts and schools are not working with the very organization that is suppose to be providing the training to school staff and teachers on Inclusion. How can things change when things stay the same and nothing different is tried?

Please take the time to open the link provided below. SHARE IT with your favorite school and the Principals. Ask to have FIN come out to your school and do a staff training on Inclusion. Just see what they 'say & do'......n o t h i n g!!!

Mariah Speaking before the Florida Senate Education Committee for Inclusion and S.B. 1108 on 3.18.13

Proposed education bill reported favorably out of Fla. Senate committee

See Mariah speaking before the Senate Education Committee 3.18.13
~ Go to 21:07 - 22:57 on the video to see Mariah and the other members of ESE Reform Taskforce of S. Florida. ~

Mariah and I testified before the Florida Senate Education Committee in support of SB 1108. We traveled with the newly formed 45 day old, ESE Reform Taskforce of S. Florida group. A group of parents that drove from South Florida to testify and tell our IEP and Special Education stories to our State Senators on behalf of Senate Bill 1108.

Mariah Harris, a 6th grader attending Parkway Middle School and included in the S.T.E.M. Magnet Program testified and spoke an awesome public speech telling the Florida State Senators why she wants to be "taught to learn and earn a real High School Diploma, because she wants to go to College to be a Vet Tech!"

The Bill passed unanimously with all in favor to pass in a 8-0 vote! This was exciting to be part of and to see Mariah read her speech before live TV and Newspaper Reporters taking notes! Mariah did an awesome job especially for it being her first major public speaking engagement. She was amazing to see her reading her speech! She was a natural public speaker! She enjoyed it and was professional about it!

Two days later House Bill, HB 465 was voted on unanimously 13-0 in favor as well!

THIS is a huge win for PARENTS of children on IEP's!!

This was a life dream for me to see my daughter well on her way to becoming a National Speaker! She is already thinking about her next speech! Her mother couldn't be prouder!

*See Mariah on The Capitol Update from March 18th, 2013. Go to 21:07-22:57 on the Video to hear Sen. Andy Gardiner and Sen. John Thrasher present on S.B. 1108. A small snippet of Mariah's speech will follow.

Letter #3 ....from Devin

Dear Mariah,
With you in my class I have learned a lot like not to be mean to people with disabilities. Over the years, I have seen people get made fun of because they have disabilities and it even hurts me.

So bye Mariah, I will miss you.
I also learned to help people with disabilities.
I will never forget you.
Nobody else will either.

From,
Devin
